AI‑Based Early Detection of Wheat Leaf Rust Gets a Boost in Haryana

Kurukshetra University’s Sandeep Gupta secures an ₹18 lakh grant to develop an AI model that spots wheat leaf rust early, helping farmers protect yields.

Haryana’s golden wheat fields are a sight to behold, but they’re also under constant threat from leaf rust – a pesky disease that silently chips away at grain quality and overall production. To tackle this, an associate professor from the Institute of Environmental Studies at Kurukshetra University has landed a sizable state grant.

Dr. Sandeep Gupta, who holds a PhD in remote sensing from Albert‑Ludwigs University in Germany, is the man behind the new venture. He says the plan is to harness modern artificial‑intelligence tools to sniff out the first signs of rust on wheat leaves, giving farmers a precious window to act.

The Haryana State Higher Education Council, through its Research Fund, approved an ₹18 lakh allocation for the project. In simple terms, that money will go into building a model that can analyze images of wheat crops, flagging any rust symptoms before they spread.

"If we can catch rust early, we can actually save a lot of grain that would otherwise be lost," Gupta explained, adding that the technology could become a cornerstone of precision agriculture in the region. He’s a little excited – and honestly, who wouldn’t be? – about the potential to improve both crop quality and farmer incomes.

Gratitude was evident as Gupta thanked the council, the university’s vice‑chancellor Somnath Sachdeva, the dean, and everyone at the institute who supported the effort. He also gave a nod to his research team, noting that their hard work made the grant possible.

Vice‑Chancellor Sachdeva chimed in, calling the grant a clear sign that Kurukshetra University’s research muscle is growing. He believes the findings will be “extremely useful for agriculture, the environment, and society,” and could bridge the gap between farmers and cutting‑edge tech.

Parmesh Kumar, director of the Institute of Environmental Studies, highlighted Gupta’s broader expertise – from remote sensing and geospatial analysis to collaborations with IIT Kanpur and TU Vienna. At present, Gupta is juggling several projects, including AI‑driven rust detection, greenhouse‑gas studies from wildfires, urban expansion mapping, and forest‑change monitoring across Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh.

Dean Jasbir Singh of the Faculty of Life Sciences added that external funding like this not only strengthens the university’s research ecosystem but also encourages interdisciplinary teamwork – something he says is essential for solving real‑world problems.

All eyes are now on the field trials, where AI could soon become a farmer’s trusty side‑kick, spotting rust before it becomes a headline‑making loss. If successful, the project might just set a new standard for crop‑health monitoring across India.
