Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed every July 26, marks the end of a grueling two‑month battle fought in some of the toughest terrain on earth. In May 1999, intruders slipped across the Line of Control and seized strategic posts along the lofty ridges, threatening the vital highway that links Srinagar to Leh. India responded with Operation Vijay – a meticulously planned and fiercely executed campaign that saw troops inching forward, month after month, until every occupied position was reclaimed.
