Kadapa's Gas Nightmare: Double Disruption Rocks Residents and Businesses in August

Kadapa, the heart of Andhra Pradesh, has been grappling with an alarming pattern of gas supply disruptions, leaving thousands of residents and businesses in disarray. August proved to be a particularly challenging month, with the region experiencing two significant outages within a mere ten days, plunging homes and industries into uncertainty.

The inconvenience and economic impact have been substantial, affecting over 10,000 connections – a crucial lifeline for cooking, heating, and industrial operations.

The repeated shutdowns have not only disrupted daily life but also sparked considerable concern over the reliability of the natural gas infrastructure managed by GAIL Gas Limited, a subsidiary of the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL).

The first blow struck on August 1st, when a crucial gas pipeline suffered damage.

This incident occurred during ongoing railway track work near Kadapa city, a stark reminder of the delicate balance required between infrastructure development and essential utility services. For two harrowing days, the taps ran dry for thousands of consumers, leaving families scrambling for alternative cooking fuels and businesses counting losses due to halted production.

Just as the community began to recover and breathe a sigh of relief, history repeated itself.

On August 9th, another major disruption hit, extending into August 10th. This time, the culprit was a technical glitch at a vital pumping station. The double whammy left residents frustrated and questioning the preventive measures and contingency plans in place.

GAIL Gas General Manager M. Balasubramanyam acknowledged the disruptions, assuring the public that both issues were addressed promptly.

He confirmed that the supply was restored after the necessary repairs were completed on the damaged pipeline and the technical fault at the pumping station was rectified. However, for the affected populace, the swift resolution could not entirely erase the memory of the prolonged inconvenience and the economic dent.

The areas most severely impacted included Kadapa city itself, alongside several surrounding villages such as Peddapasupula, Palagiri, Kamanur, Pendlimarri, and Obulavaripalle.

These communities found their daily routines upended, with domestic chores becoming a struggle and small-scale industries facing temporary shutdowns, resulting in lost wages and production delays.

The recurring nature of these outages highlights a pressing need for a more robust and resilient gas supply network in Kadapa.
