Jio Platforms IPO Sets Global Record with Over 1 Crore Applications

World’s First IPO to Attract More Than 10 Million Applications – Jio Platforms’ $3.2 bn Offering Breaks All Barriers

The Jio Platforms IPO became the first ever issue to pull in over 1 crore (10 million) applications, smashing previous world records and getting snapped up almost seven‑fold.

When Jio Platforms Ltd opened its book for a $3.2 billion initial public offering, nobody could have guessed it would rewrite the history books. By the end of the subscription window the offer had drawn more than 1 crore (10 million) applications – a milestone never seen before in any market worldwide.

The previous high‑water mark belonged to Waaree Energies, which managed 97 lakh (9.7 million) applications a few years back. Jio’s numbers not only eclipsed that figure but also sent a clear signal that investors, both retail and institutional, are hungry for a slice of India’s telecom giant.

Speed was another surprise. Within the first 100 minutes of the opening, the entire issue was fully subscribed, making it one of the quickest fills in Indian IPO history. Retail investors, who traditionally take a back‑seat to foreign and institutional players, jumped in hard on day 2 – their demand hitting 2.03 times the allocation, with bids for 17.29 crore shares against an 8.5 crore quota reserved for them.

Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) were even more aggressive. By the close of day 2 they had placed bids that were almost 15 times the share pool set aside for them, pushing the overall subscription level to nearly seven‑fold. The majority of bids landed at the top of the price band, Rs 1,119 per share, ballooning the total demand to over $15 billion.

Anchor investors such as the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, BlackRock and Fidelity also locked in sizeable chunks, lending further credibility to the issue. Analysts suggest that the final tally of applications could climb even higher, potentially setting a new global benchmark for IPOs in the telecom and technology space.

For India’s capital markets, the Jio Platforms IPO may become a case study on how a well‑branded, high‑growth company can galvanise a diverse investor base, from ordinary citizens to heavyweight sovereign funds, all vying for a piece of the future of connectivity.
