Jharkhand Protests Take Ugly Turn: Woman Activist Alleges Molestation Amidst Political Firestorm

In a rather concerning turn of events that has significantly escalated the ongoing political and social tensions in Jharkhand, a woman activist in Ranchi has come forward to file a formal complaint alleging molestation, assault, and even death threats. This serious accusation stems from an effigy-burning protest against the Jharkhand government that took place on August 21st, adding a grim new dimension to the already fervent public outcry over alleged irregularities in state examinations.

Pratima Kumari, a vocal member of the JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch – a group tirelessly advocating for transparency and fairness in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission – lodged her complaint at Ranchi's Kotwali Police Station. She recounted how, during the demonstration on August 21st, protesters were symbolically burning effigies of both Rahul Gandhi and the Chief Minister, expressing their deep dissatisfaction with the state government. It was then, she claims, that a group of around 40-50 individuals, whom she described as "goons," reportedly infiltrated the procession, attempting to snatch the effigies and disrupt the peaceful protest.

The complaint specifically names several individuals: Navin Chanchal, Uttam Yadav, Shahbaaz Malik, Mustaq Alam, Ashutosh Verma alias Sonu Verma, Ankita Verma, Dr. Hemlal Kumar Mehta, and Ashwini Sharma. What makes this filing particularly noteworthy is the robust political backing Pratima Kumari received. Senior BJP leaders, including the state's formidable Leader of Opposition, Babulal Marandi, along with Deepak Prakash and Amar Kumar Bauri, stood resolutely by her side as she took this brave step, amplifying the incident's political resonance.

The BJP leadership wasted no time in condemning the alleged incident. Amar Kumar Bauri, the General Secretary of Jharkhand BJP, didn't mince words, describing the event as a deliberate and heavy-handed attempt to suppress a legitimate, democratic student movement. Meanwhile, Babulal Marandi directly pointed fingers at workers of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), accusing them of attacking the student protesters and sharply questioning the police's delayed or, as he suggested, inadequate response. BJP spokesperson Sandeep Verma further contextualized the protest, reminding everyone of the ongoing struggle against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations, even citing a Supreme Court notice in the matter, highlighting the widespread discontent.

Ranchi Police confirmed they've registered three separate FIRs in connection with the clashes and disruptions that marred the march. These cases collectively name 14 individuals specifically, with an additional 200-plus unidentified persons also booked across the three complaints. Ranchi City DSP KV Raman offered the official police narrative, stating that mild force was indeed used, but only after protesters allegedly veered off their designated route, causing public disturbance. The very issue of exam irregularities has already reached the esteemed Jharkhand High Court, specifically regarding the state government's cancellation of the FRO (Range Forest Officer) and ACF (Assistant Conservator of Forests) examinations. The court, noting that no appointments had been made from those exams, recently directed the state government to file a counter-affidavit by September 24th, with the next hearing scheduled for the same date. Advocates Naveen Kumar and Suraj Verma are representing the petitioners, while Advocate General Rohitashya Roy is defending the Jharkhand government.
