Jharkhand Mourns Sudivya Kumar, Senior JMM Leader and Minister, Who Died at 56

Sudivya Kumar, a name that resonated across the hills and plains of Jharkhand, died unexpectedly on the night of September 5, 2026. The 56‑year‑old senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) suffered a cardiac arrest, and his passing was confirmed by Chief Minister Hemant Soren early the next morning.

Kumar was a versatile minister in the state cabinet. At the time of his death he held the portfolios of Higher and Technical Education, Urban Development, as well as Tourism, Arts & Culture, and Sports & Youth Affairs. His responsibilities stretched from university corridors to the bustling streets of Giridih, where he was a two‑term MLA representing the constituency that had made him a familiar face.

The loss hit the political establishment hard. Governor Santosh Gangwar expressed his sorrow, describing Kumar as “a dedicated public servant whose commitment to Jharkhand’s development was unwavering.” Meanwhile, CM Hemant Soren took to social media, writing, “I have lost an elder brother. Sudivya Kumar Sonu Ji was more than a colleague; he was a guiding force, a steadfast companion through the toughest of times.” Soren recalled their shared journey since the early Jharkhand movement, emphasizing Kumar’s devotion to the state’s identity and rights.

In an act of official respect, the state announced two days of mourning. Flags will fly at half‑mast, and all government offices will observe a moment of silence. The final rites are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today at the Usri River‑Harsinghraydih cremation ground in Giridih district, where a gathering of party workers, colleagues, and citizens is expected.

Friends and foes alike have remembered Kumar’s easy smile, his knack for bridging political divides, and his tireless work for education and youth. As one party worker put it, “He was the kind of leader who listened first, spoke later, and always put Jharkhand’s future ahead of personal ambition.” The void he leaves behind, both in the JMM’s ranks and in the hearts of ordinary people, will be felt for years to come.
