O’Connell laughed at the comparison, noting that he doesn’t recall the exact phrasing and would have been unlikely to say, “Nope, sorry home girl, things change, but you take care, OK?” He added, “If I were writing a memoir, I might have crafted a snappier line.”

Regardless of the wording, O’Connell admits the breakup was mishandled. “I was a pretty terrible boyfriend,” he said, pausing before apologizing directly to Rancic. “I was not a great boyfriend, and I should have been clearer about how things were going.” He concluded with a brief, sincere apology: “Let me take this moment to apologize to Giuliana for being a terrible boyfriend.”

Rancic, who married businessman Bill Rancic in 2007, has long spoken about the experience, describing the intercom exchange as both painful and oddly theatrical.
