Jackie's Brave Fight: A Beloved Eagle's Journey Back

Oh, the internet's heart has been heavy lately, hasn't it? Our beloved Jackie, the internet-famous bald eagle from Big Bear Valley, is still fighting for her life, and honestly, every update feels like a rollercoaster. She's been at the Ojai Raptor Center, getting round-the-clock care, and while her condition is certainly still critical, there's a tiny, hopeful flicker: she's showing a bit more "feistiness" during her feedings. It's a small detail, but for those of us who've been following her journey, it means so much.

Just recently, we heard that her packed cell volume (PCV), a key indicator of her blood health, nudged up to 16 percent. Now, that's not a huge jump, especially after a scary setback on July 25th when her blood values took a dip right after a much-needed transfusion. But still, it’s movement in the right direction, a sign that perhaps, just perhaps, she's finding a little more strength within her magnificent self. It makes you just want to send her all the good vibes, doesn't it?

The dedicated folks at the Ojai Raptor Center are doing everything they can. They're working tirelessly, but here's the tough part: despite all their extensive diagnostic tests and consultations with top wildlife vets, they still don't have a definitive diagnosis for what's making our Jackie so unwell. Meanwhile, back in the stunning San Bernardino National Forest, her devoted partner, Shadow, is undoubtedly keeping watch. And what about their precious eaglets from this year, Sandy and Luna? Born just a few months ago, on April 4th and 5th, their names were announced with such joy by the Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) on May 1st. But here's another worry that weighs on the community: the last time anyone saw Sandy and Luna on camera was way back on July 23rd. FOBBV acknowledges the uncertainty, stating, "It is not confirmed [that] Sandy and Luna have left the area, we can only observe and time will tell." The hope, of course, is that they've simply taken to the skies, embracing their independence as young eagles do.

Jackie and Shadow have quite a history together, a real soap opera if you think about it. They first paired up back in 2018 and have successfully raised chicks in 2019 and 2022. There were tougher years too, like 2023 and 2024, when their eggs sadly didn't hatch. And who could forget March 2025, when a sudden snowstorm tragically claimed one of their three chicks? They've been through so much, these two, which just makes Jackie's current struggle all the more poignant.

The Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that so diligently monitors these magnificent birds and provides us with their captivating livestream, has been instrumental throughout this whole saga. They’re even working towards a significant goal – purchasing land to protect the eagles' habitat, with generous support from folks like Anna and Greg Brockman (yes, the co-founder of OpenAI!). It's a testament to how deeply people care about these creatures and their future.
