IUML Leader Expelled and Arrested for Derogatory Remarks Against Kerala MLA U Prathibha

In a story that's certainly stirred the political pot in Kerala, a leader from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Aboobacker Siddique, found himself in hot water – and subsequently in police custody – after making some truly reprehensible remarks about CPM MLA U Prathibha. Not only was he arrested, but his own party didn't waste any time, swiftly showing him the door in a clear condemnation of his behaviour.

It all happened during a public gathering in Kannur, where Siddique reportedly made utterances that, frankly, crossed a line, targeting MLA Prathibha in a manner that was both demeaning and derogatory. You can just imagine the immediate uproar and outrage such comments would generate, especially when aimed at a public figure.

Following the public outcry and a formal complaint lodged by the CPM Kannur district committee, the wheels of justice began to turn pretty quickly. The police, acting on the seriousness of the accusations, registered a case against Siddique. Specifically, he was booked under Indian Penal Code sections 354 A(1)(iv) – which deals with making sexually coloured remarks – along with 509, concerning words, gestures, or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman. They also included section 120 (o) of the Kerala Police Act, which pertains to causing nuisance or annoyance in public.

On Saturday, the authorities moved in. Kannur DySP T K Ratnakaran led the operation, and Siddique was arrested. However, the legal process, as it often does, saw him being released on bail a short while later. Still, the arrest itself sends a strong message that such behaviour will not be tolerated.

Meanwhile, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) was quick to distance itself from Siddique's actions. Recognizing the gravity of his statements and the damage they could inflict on the party's reputation, they took decisive action, expelling him from the party. It’s a move that underscores the widespread disapproval of his comments and, one hopes, reinforces the idea that respectful discourse, even in the heated arena of politics, is absolutely essential. Sadly, such incidents are not unheard of, but the swift and strong response from both law enforcement and his own party offers a glimmer of hope for maintaining some level of decency in public life.
