Inferno Engulfs Historic Kayem Foods Factory in Chelsea

A towering inferno ripped through the historic Kayem Foods factory in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in the predawn hours of Friday, June 28, escalating into a formidable 6-alarm blaze that challenged firefighters for hours. The devastating fire caused widespread destruction, leaving a significant portion of the century-old facility in ruins and prompting a massive emergency response from across the region.

The colossal fire erupted around 2:40 a.m.

at the Kayem Foods plant located at 199 Everett Avenue. Within minutes, the scale of the conflagration became terrifyingly apparent, with flames consuming large sections of the structure. Firefighters from Chelsea were swiftly joined by numerous departments, including Boston, Revere, Everett, Malden, and Somerville, as the incident quickly escalated through multiple alarms.

Over 100 dedicated firefighters battled the raging inferno, facing not only intense flames but also the additional challenge of bitterly cold temperatures, which complicated water supply efforts and created hazardous icing conditions.

Despite the arduous conditions and the sheer intensity of the blaze, remarkably, no injuries were reported among any of the brave firefighters or civilians.

The fire's destructive path led to significant structural compromise. Roughly two-thirds of the sprawling 200,000-square-foot facility sustained heavy damage, including a partial roof collapse.

The Chelsea Fire Chief emphasized the complexity of the investigation due to the extensive damage.
