India's Fiery Heart Awakens: Barren Island Volcano Records Two Mild Eruptions

In a dramatic display of nature's raw power, Barren Island, India's solitary active volcano, has once again stirred to life, captivating scientists and observers alike. Nestled in the remote reaches of the Andaman Sea, this fiery sentinel has reported two mild eruptions, sending plumes of ash and smoke into the sky and streams of molten lava cascading into the ocean.

The latest activity was meticulously documented by a team of scientists from the Goa-based National Institute of Oceanography (NIO).

While on an expedition aboard their research vessel RV Sindhu Sankalp for sampling mud volcanoes, the researchers bore witness to the volcano's magnificent awakening. Their observations confirm that Barren Island is not merely dormant but vibrantly active, continuing its geological saga.

Mudholkar, who led the scientific team, recounted the awe-inspiring spectacle: "The volcano is erupting in regular small pulses, with lava fountaining from the main crater and flowing down the slopes. During the daytime, only ash clouds were seen. However, after sunset, the red lava flows could be distinctly observed from the ship." This vivid description paints a picture of intense yet contained geological activity, a breathtaking sight against the backdrop of the ocean.

The molten lava, a fiery river, was seen relentlessly flowing into the sea, creating dramatic interactions with the cool waters and causing steam and minor explosions.

Simultaneously, the volcano continued to emit ash and smoke, painting the sky with an eerie, beautiful haze, a testament to the immense pressures and temperatures brewing beneath the Earth's crust.

Barren Island holds a significant place in India's geological landscape. After remaining dormant for a staggering 150 years, it dramatically re-erupted in 1991.

Following this, it saw another period of intense activity in 2017, proving its moniker as India's only active volcano.
