India's EV Retail Sales Jump 53% YoY in August, Yet Slip Month‑to‑Month

EV retail in India surged 53% year‑on‑year in August 2026, but fell 9% from July

August 2026 saw a record‑breaking 2.98 lakh electric vehicles sold in India – up 53% from a year earlier – yet sales slipped 9% compared with July, driven by mixed performance across segments.

According to the latest figures from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric‑vehicle retail in India hit an all‑time high for the month of August 2026. 2,98,448 EVs changed hands, which is a staggering 52.9 % increase over the same period last year.

That surge pushed the overall EV share of new‑vehicle sales to 12.3 %, up from just 9.5 % a year ago. In other words, more than one in eight cars or two‑wheelers bought in August was electric – a clear sign that the market is finally gaining momentum.

But it wasn’t all good news. When you compare August with July, total EV retail actually slipped about 9 %. The dip was felt across most categories – two‑wheelers, three‑wheelers and passenger cars all posted lower numbers than the previous month.

Electric two‑wheelers, which still dominate the EV space, recorded a 67.05 % year‑on‑year rise, reaching 1,83,204 units. Still, that was a 10.35 % drop from July, and their penetration fell to 10.7 % of all two‑wheelers, down from 11.2 % in the prior month.

Three‑wheelers did better than you might expect – they grew 25.28 % YoY to 79,846 units, but even they slipped 8.28 % month‑on‑month. Their electric share jumped to 65.3 % of total three‑wheelers, up from 56.6 % a year earlier.

Passenger electric vehicles saw a 51.89 % YoY rise, totalling 30,696 units, yet they were 6.78 % lower than July’s figure. Their share of the passenger‑car market rose to 7.6 % from 5.8 % a year ago.

The real surprise came from electric commercial vehicles. This segment exploded, posting a 188.3 % YoY increase and a 32.23 % rise from July, reaching 4,702 units – the highest monthly number ever recorded. Their share of the commercial‑vehicle market jumped to 5.18 % from just 2.06 % a year ago.

FADA President Sai Giridhar called August 2026 “the strongest August on record for electric mobility in India.” He noted that every one of the four EV categories set a fresh August record, underscoring how the market is consolidating at a new plateau despite a softer overall auto retail environment.

In short, while the month‑to‑month dip suggests a short‑term wobble, the year‑on‑year growth and expanding penetration indicate that electric mobility is here to stay, and perhaps even accelerate in the months ahead.
