India's Apex Court Rekindles Hope: Green Crackers Get the Green Light Amid Pollution Battle

In a significant shift, India's Supreme Court has signaled a re-evaluation of its stance on firecrackers, granting a conditional nod to the production of 'green crackers.' The court's directive is rooted in the concept of 'green crackers' – fireworks developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) through its National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).

The bench, comprising Justice A.S. Bopanna and Justice M.M. Sundresh, emphasized the need for a comprehensive scientific study to clearly differentiate between regular and green crackers. The Supreme Court has mandated that only those green crackers approved by regulatory bodies, and whose chemical compositions adhere to the prescribed reduced-emission standards, can be manufactured.
