Indian Oil's Green Flight: Pioneering Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Waste Oil at Panipat

In a groundbreaking stride towards a greener future for aviation, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is poised to revolutionize the skies. By December, the energy giant is set to commission its cutting-edge Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production unit at the Panipat refinery. This isn't just about producing fuel; it's about transforming used cooking oil (UCO) – a significant waste product – into a high-value, eco-friendly aviation fuel, marking a monumental step in India's journey towards energy sustainability and decarbonization.

This pioneering project is more than just an industrial endeavor; it's a testament to innovation and environmental responsibility.

Leveraging advanced technology provided by Praj Industries, the Panipat unit will initially have the capacity to produce 100 tonnes per day (TPD) of SAF. The vision, however, extends far beyond this initial phase, with ambitious plans to scale up production to 300 TPD, significantly boosting India's capacity to produce cleaner jet fuel domestically.

The shift to SAF is critical for the aviation sector, one of the hardest industries to decarbonize.

Unlike traditional fossil fuels, SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80%, offering a powerful solution to combat climate change. By utilizing used cooking oil, IOC is not only creating a cleaner fuel but also championing the principles of a circular economy – transforming waste into a valuable resource and alleviating the environmental burden of discarded oils.

The success of this initiative hinges on the establishment of a robust and efficient used cooking oil collection ecosystem.

Efforts will intensify to gather UCO from a vast network of sources, including hotels, restaurants, catering businesses, and even households, creating new value chains and economic opportunities. This systematic collection will ensure a steady feedstock for the refinery, turning what was once a disposal challenge into a sustainable fuel source.
