Electric vehicle sales surge to record levels in August, but dip compared to July
August 2026 saw Indian EV retail hit a new high of 298,448 units, up 52.9% from a year earlier, while month‑on‑month sales slipped 9%. EV penetration rose to 12.3%.
India’s electric‑vehicle market showed a mixed bag in August 2026. On the one hand, total EV retail climbed dramatically – about 298,000 units left showrooms, which is a 52.9% jump compared with the same month last year. On the other hand, those figures were roughly 9% lower than July’s tally, hinting at a slight pause after the earlier surge.
According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), EVs now make up 12.3% of all vehicles sold in the country, a noticeable rise from 9.5% a year ago. That uptick in penetration suggests the green‑mobility push is finally catching on, even if the overall auto market is cooling a bit.
“August 2026 was the biggest‑ever August for electric mobility in India,” said FADA President Sai Giridhar. “All four EV categories posted fresh August records – there wasn’t a single segment that missed the mark.” His optimism reflects the broader sentiment that the sector is settling onto a new, higher plateau.
Electric two‑wheelers led the charge, posting a 67.05% year‑on‑year rise to 183,204 units. Still, they slipped 10.35% compared with July, and their market share settled at 10.7% – up from 7.7% a year earlier but a shade below July’s 11.2%.
Electric three‑wheelers also grew, up 25.28% YoY to 79,846 units, yet they fell 8.28% MoM. Their share of the total three‑wheel‑vehicle market jumped to 65.3% from 56.6% a year back, underscoring a clear shift toward electrification in that segment.
Passenger electric vehicles saw a healthy 51.89% year‑on‑year increase, reaching 30,696 units. Nevertheless, they declined 6.78% from the previous month, holding a 7.6% slice of the passenger‑car market versus 5.8% a year ago.
The real standout was the electric commercial‑vehicle category. Retail numbers surged a staggering 188.3% YoY and climbed 32.23% MoM to 4,702 units – the highest monthly total ever recorded for this segment. Their share of the commercial‑vehicle market rose to 5.18% from just 2.06% a year earlier, nearly tripling its presence.
Giridhar summed it up nicely: “Electric commercial vehicles touched an all‑time monthly high of 4,702 units – the single best month in our entire series.”
Even as overall auto retail softened, EV sales have managed to stay close to recent records, indicating a consolidation phase. The sector appears to be building a new, steadier base rather than soaring erratically, pointing to a more mature market outlook.
While the month‑on‑month dip is a reminder that growth isn’t always linear, the year‑on‑year momentum signals that India’s electric‑mobility transition is well underway.
