India’s 2026 BRICS Chairmanship: A Drive Toward Innovation, AI and Digital Resilience

New Delhi will host the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12‑13, 2026, and the country is already painting a vivid picture of what its chairmanship will look like. In a breezy tweet posted on X, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal summed it up: “From innovation to action – through knowledge sharing, mentorship, digital infrastructure and AI, India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 is fostering collaboration, strengthening capabilities and enabling new solutions.”

The theme that will guide the summit – “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” – mirrors Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s people‑first rhetoric of “Humanity First.” It’s more than a slogan; it’s a pledge to weave technology and empathy into the fabric of the eleven‑nation bloc.

At the heart of the plan lies an innovation pillar that promises concrete tools for entrepreneurs and researchers. A new BRICS Startup Innovation Fund will pour seed capital into promising ventures, while an incubator network spreads across member states to nurture early‑stage ideas. Young founders get a dedicated Youth Startup Platform, giving them mentorship, exposure and a splash of funding.

But innovation isn’t confined to boardrooms. The Ministry’s video teaser spotlighted a “one library of science for eleven countries” – essentially a shared research repository that could become the region’s collective brain. Parallel to that, a Digital Health Architecture for a Continuum of Care Compendium aims to link clinics, hospitals and tele‑medicine services, making health data travel securely across borders.

Digital agriculture, smart city transit and AI‑enabled cultural heritage identification are also on the agenda. Imagine farms that talk to satellites for water‑saving advice, or city buses that adjust routes in real time based on commuter patterns. Even traditional medicine gets a nod with a dedicated knowledge compendium, ensuring ancient wisdom isn’t lost amid the tech rush.

Resilience, another cornerstone, will be bolstered through better trade finance, social security nets and connectivity for remote communities. A BRICS Urban Mobility Hub and a Digital Agriculture Network are slated to pilot projects that could later scale to the whole bloc.
