India Prepares for a New Era: The Swearing-In of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar

A new chapter in India's political landscape is poised to begin as the nation eagerly awaits the formal swearing-in of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the newly elected 14th Vice President of India. The much-anticipated date for his oath-taking ceremony, a pivotal moment of transition and national significance, has been finalized following crucial consultations held today, September 7, 2022, between the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, Utpal Kumar Singh, and the secretariats of both the President and the outgoing Vice President.

The ceremonial preparations are in full swing, ensuring a dignified transfer of power.

President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Mr. Dhankhar, formally ushering him into one of the country's highest constitutional roles. This event follows the conclusion of the distinguished tenure of M. Venkaiah Naidu, whose term as Vice President gracefully ended on August 10, leaving a void now ready to be filled by his successor.

Dhankhar's journey to this esteemed position is marked by a rich career in public service. Prior to his election, he served with distinction as the Governor of West Bengal, a role from which he formally resigned on August 7, 2022. His resignation was promptly accepted by the President, clearing his path to the Vice Presidency.

In the interim, the Governor of Manipur, La Ganesan, has been given the additional charge of West Bengal, ensuring continuity in the state’s administration.

His electoral victory was decisive, reflecting broad support. In the Vice Presidential election, Jagdeep Dhankhar garnered an impressive 528 votes, significantly outperforming his opponent, Margaret Alva, who secured 268 votes.

This mandate underscores the confidence reposed in him by the electoral college.

Hailing from the state of Rajasthan, Mr. Dhankhar is a seasoned lawyer by profession, bringing a wealth of legal and administrative experience to his new office. His extensive political career includes stints as a Member of Parliament and a Member of Legislative Assembly, in addition to serving as a Union Minister.

These varied roles have equipped him with a deep understanding of India's parliamentary and governmental systems.

Beyond the symbolic significance, the Vice President's role carries substantial constitutional responsibilities. As the Vice President, Mr. Dhankhar will also assume the crucial position of the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of India's Parliament.
