IMD Rain Alert: Which Schools Are Closed on July 27 Across India?

India’s weather service, the IMD, raised the alarm on July 27, flagging heavy to very heavy rain across large swathes of the country. The warning didn’t translate into a blanket school shutdown, but a few hard‑hit districts chose to stay home.

In Uttarakhand, the Bageshwar district announced a one‑day holiday for every school from class 1 to 12, along with Anganwadi centres. The decision came straight after the Dehradun centre issued a heavy‑rainfall warning for the area.

The IMD has already placed Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj under a red alert for extreme rainfall, while an orange alert covers a longer list that includes Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack and Jharsuguda. Fishermen have been told to keep their boats ashore until at least July 29.

Gujarat and Maharashtra, however, have not announced any state‑wide holidays yet. Both states are seeing pockets of water‑logging and rising river levels, especially in low‑lying districts of Gujarat and the Konkan belt of Maharashtra. The respective state governments have left the call to district authorities, who will act only if flooding or unsafe travel conditions materialise.

In the Himalayan belt, the situation remains fluid. Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir continue to monitor landslide risks, flash‑flood possibilities and road closures. District administrations have the power to suspend classes locally, should the weather turn dangerous.

Speaking of Jammu & Kashmir, the region is doing the opposite of the rain‑hit districts: schools are reopening on July 27. After extending the summer break twice—first to July 22 and then to July 26—state officials say the weather has improved enough to resume normal academic activities.

For parents wondering whether their child’s school is open, the safest bet is to wait for an official notice from the district or state education department. Check school apps, WhatsApp groups or the department’s website rather than relying on unverified messages.

In an unrelated move, the Visakhapatnam district administration announced a two‑day holiday on July 28‑29 for 221 schools and colleges. The break is meant to ease traffic during the annual Simhachalam Giripradakshina pilgrimage, not because of weather.
