Illicit Liquor Tragedy Claims 11 Lives in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar District

At least eleven people lost their lives early Sunday, and more than thirty others were rushed to hospitals after what authorities say was a bout of toxic, illegally‑manufactured liquor in the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh.

The victims hailed from the villages of Ghughar, Nauraj, Baraj and nearby hamlets. As their conditions worsened, families hurried them to Banda Civil Hospital, where doctors, after futile attempts at treatment, pronounced several of them dead.

Sagar Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujania confirmed eight deaths initially, with three patients still in critical condition. He added that the preliminary cause appears to be the consumption of contaminated, illicit liquor – a grim reminder of the dangers of unregulated spirits.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reacted swiftly, ordering an immediate, thorough inquiry and demanding that the responsible officials take “the strictest possible action.” He assured the public that his government would not tolerate such incidents and promised that those behind the illegal brew would be held accountable.

Collector Pratibha Pal, after receiving the distressing news, arrived at the hospital herself. She directed medical teams to be on standby and urged anyone who drank alcohol in the past 24‑48 hours to get checked, especially if they’re experiencing symptoms like vomiting, dizziness or abdominal pain. Pal said residents could approach local health workers or head straight to Banda Civil Hospital for an examination.

Incidents of illicit‑liquor poisoning are, unfortunately, not new in the region, but each tragedy underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement and public awareness. Authorities are now racing against time to identify the source of the bootleg liquor, trace its distribution network, and prevent any further loss of life.
