Ibrahim Zadran Steps Up as Afghanistan’s New T20I Captain

When the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced Ibrahim Zadran as the new captain for the upcoming T20I series, the young batsman didn’t hide his excitement – or the nerves that come with it. “It’s a big responsibility for me,” he told reporters in New Delhi, smiling, “but I’m trying to enjoy it, take ownership and make the right calls when the heat is on.”

For Zadran, the transition feels natural. He spent the last year as Rashid Khan’s deputy, soaking up the nuances of on‑field strategy and off‑field camaraderie. “Rashid and I have a good rapport; our communication will help me settle into this role quickly,” he added, hinting that the former captain will still be a guiding voice from the dressing room.

The series kicks off on Sunday, September 13, at the historic Feroz Shah Kotla. Zadran says the Afghan side is comfortable with the Indian conditions, having played there during the World Cup. “We know the pitches, the weather, the crowds. Now it’s about executing our plan, step by step,” he explained.

Beyond the personal milestone, Zadran emphasized a team‑first mindset. “We’re not looking at the result; we’re focusing on the process. Give 100 % each ball, stick to the game plan, and hopefully the series will go our way,” he said, urging patience and perseverance.

There are a few familiar faces returning to the squad, too. Fast bowler Naveen‑ul‑Haq is back after recovering from a shoulder stress fracture, while all‑rounder Gulbadin Naib re‑joins the middle order, offering both batting depth and an extra bowling option. Their experience, Zadran believes, will be vital in tight moments.
