IAF to Join Australia’s Pitch Black 2026 Exercise Starting July 20

The Indian Air Force is set to touch down in Darwin, Australia, on Monday, July 20, to kick off its participation in the much‑anticipated Exercise Pitch Black 2026. The biennial drill runs until August 7 and is the Royal Australian Air Force’s flagship multinational air‑combat exercise.

Pitch Black gets its name from the emphasis on night flying over the vast, sparsely populated stretches of northern Australia. This year marks the 45th edition and, by all accounts, will host one of the biggest line‑ups of partner air forces ever assembled.

India’s contingent is a mixed bag of pilots, engineers, technicians, air‑traffic controllers and other specialists. In the skies they’ll field the sleek Rafale multirole fighters, while on the ground the heavy‑lift C‑17 Globemaster III and the aerial‑refuelling IL‑78 will provide logistical and combat‑support firepower.

The Ministry of Defence says the exercise is a chance to sharpen interoperability, tighten force integration and swap operational best practices in a realistic, high‑tempo environment. In plain terms, it’s about proving that we can move aircraft, fuel and people over long distances and still fight as a cohesive unit.

For the IAF, this isn’t the first rodeo. It previously took part in the 2018, 2022 and 2024 editions, each time reinforcing defence ties and contributing to regional stability across the Indo‑Pacific.

All in all, Pitch Black 2026 offers a rare laboratory where air forces can test expeditionary concepts, build professional friendships and, perhaps most importantly, learn how to operate side‑by‑side under the cover of night.
