Hours‑Long SWAT Standoff in Logan Square Ends After Overnight Siege

On Monday, just before noon, an emergency call sent Chicago’s police SWAT team racing to the 3400 block of West Wrightwood Avenue in Logan Square. The dispatch described a man inside the residence who was allegedly armed and refusing to come out.

What unfolded was a tense, hours‑long standoff that stretched well into the night. Officers set up a perimeter, shouted for the individual to surrender, and even used a chemical irritant in an attempt to force the door open. At one point the suspect fired a rifle out a window, prompting some officers to take cover behind a nearby vehicle.

Neighbors on the block, which also happens to be where former Mayor Lori Lightfoot lives, gathered on the sidewalk to watch the scene unfold. Lightfoot’s office quickly confirmed she was unharmed and that the incident did not involve her home in any way. No other injuries were reported on the street.

One eyewitness told the Tribune that police kept repeating, “Drop the rifle!” as they tried to negotiate. The repeated pleas, the occasional flash of police flashlights, and the distant sound of a police‑issued megaphone became a strange soundtrack for the evening.

After several hours of back‑and‑forth, and with the help of negotiators, the suspect finally lowered his weapon and stepped out of the house just before dawn. He was taken into custody without further incident, and the SWAT team began clearing the scene.

Chicago Police Department officials said the investigation is still ongoing, and they have not released a motive or further details about the suspect’s identity. The department thanked residents for their patience and urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
