When my husband, Lalit, and I first opened the doors of The LaLiT in New Delhi, we weren’t just building a building – we were trying to bottle the very soul of India and serve it on a silver platter. It felt a bit like a dare, but also a promise to the world: let them taste our hospitality, our culture, our generosity.

We christened the parent company Bharat Hotels because, simply put, we wanted the world to feel the unmistakable character of Indian hospitality. That name still hums in our boardrooms, reminding us why #HospitalityWithAHeart was born.

Over the years three ideas have become our compass. They’re not fancy buzzwords; they’re habits we’ve lived out in every hallway, kitchen and garden. They are Homegrown, Inclusive and Sustainable.

Homegrown is about wearing our Indian identity on our sleeves. At The LaLiT a guest isn’t just handed a key – they’re offered a warm “Namaskar”, a gesture that carries centuries of respect. It’s more than a polite hello; it’s an invitation to sit, share, and feel valued. Each property – whether it rests in the snow‑capped lanes of Srinagar, the breezy beaches of Goa, or the bustling streets of Kolkata – is a love‑letter to its locale. You’ll hear the aroma of Kashmiri saffron in the north, taste Goan fish curry by the sea, and spot Bengali textiles woven into our décor. The aim? To let you walk out of our lobby with a story about the place, not just a receipt.

Inclusion and hospitality are inseparable, like chai and biscuits. We believe every traveler, every employee, every passer‑by should feel they belong. That’s why the Keshav Suri Foundation and The LaLiT have opened doors for more than 2,000 LGBTQIA+ individuals, provided skill‑training for people with disabilities, welcomed acid‑attack survivors and embraced neuro‑divergent talent. When a guest sees a smiling face at the front desk and hears a sincere “Namaskar”, they instantly sense that they are accepted just as they are. It may sound simple, but that little moment can change a day, a mood, even a life.

Sustainability for us isn’t a marketing checklist; it’s a thank‑you note to Mother Earth. Every tree we plant, every carbon‑neutral property we run, every farm‑to‑table dish we serve is our way of repaying the planet that has given us so much. To date, we’ve planted over two million saplings across India. Six of our hotels now boast a net‑zero carbon footprint, and our kitchens strive for zero waste – leftovers become compost, and surplus produce finds a home in local shelters.

Looking back, each milestone feels like a shared celebration. From the first Namaskar at our Delhi lobby to the latest solar panel on our rooftop in Jaipur, the thread that ties it all together is a simple desire: to make people feel genuinely welcomed, respected and cared for.
