Horror in the Skies: Lawsuit Unveils Allegations of 'Straitjacket' Restraints on ICE Deportation Flight

A disturbing lawsuit has cast a harsh spotlight on the alleged inhumane treatment of West African migrants by U.S. authorities during a deportation flight, claiming individuals were subjected to excruciating full restraints, including straitjackets, for an agonizing 16 hours. Filed by four migrants with the support of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the legal challenge targets both U.S.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Classic Air Charter, the private company contracted for the flight.

The harrowing ordeal allegedly unfolded in September 2020, on a flight departing from Alexandria International Airport in Louisiana bound for Accra, Ghana. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiffs, along with others, were forced into "full restraints" – a terrifying combination of straitjackets, handcuffs, and leg shackles – for the entirety of the long-haul journey.

This extreme measure, the lawsuit asserts, was applied despite no apparent safety threat, turning a deportation into a deeply traumatic and potentially unlawful experience.

The allegations paint a grim picture of systematic dehumanization. Migrants were reportedly denied fundamental human necessities, including access to food, water, and the ability to use a restroom, for the entire 16-hour duration.

This blatant disregard for basic human dignity led to severe physical distress and profound psychological trauma. The plaintiffs detail suffering from a range of injuries, from muscle atrophy and nerve damage due to the prolonged, restrictive positions, to severe anxiety, humiliation, and lasting emotional scars.

The lawsuit contends that such treatment constitutes a clear violation of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the U.S.

Constitution, which protect against unreasonable searches and seizures, and ensure due process and freedom from cruel and unusual punishment. The ACLU argues that the use of such severe and prolonged restraints, particularly when unaccompanied by any demonstrable security risk, is an affront to basic human rights and goes far beyond acceptable protocols for managing individuals in custody.
