Horrific Chain Snatching in Bengaluru Leaves Woman Mutilated, Two Arrested

A horrifying incident of chain snatching in Bengaluru has sent shockwaves through the city, leaving a woman with severed fingers and raising serious concerns about public safety. The brutal assault occurred on Sunday, May 5th, in the city's Whitefield area, when two bike-borne assailants targeted a 49-year-old woman, Padma, in a daylight robbery.

Padma, a resident of Kannamangala in Kadugodi, was reportedly walking alone when the criminals, later identified as 22-year-old Rahul and 20-year-old Akash, accosted her.

In a desperate attempt to snatch her gold chain, the duo mercilessly dragged her for a considerable distance, refusing to let go. The struggle escalated into a horrific scene as one of the culprits, in a fit of rage and determination to get the chain, used a sharp object to sever three of Padma’s fingers.

The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment for her grievous injuries.

Doctors are working to assess the extent of the damage and whether the severed fingers can be reattached, though the outlook remains challenging given the nature of the injury and the time elapsed. The incident has left Padma and her family traumatized, highlighting the extreme violence some criminals are willing to employ for petty gains.

Following a swift investigation, Bengaluru city police launched a massive manhunt.

Utilizing CCTV footage from the vicinity and leveraging intelligence, officers managed to track down and apprehend the two suspects within a short period. The arrested individuals, Rahul and Akash, are now in police custody, facing charges related to robbery and grievous assault. Police are also investigating if they have any prior criminal records or are part of a larger gang.
