Eleanor Vance, A Gentle Soul Who Nurtured Charleston's Heart

The community mourns the peaceful passing of Eleanor Vance, 88, who departed on September 17, 2025.

A lifelong resident of Charleston, Eleanor was a beacon of grace and quiet strength, known for her boundless kindness and the warmth she extended to everyone she met. She dedicated countless hours to volunteering at the Charleston Public Library, where her passion for literature was contagious, and her famous pecan pies became a staple at every community gathering.

Eleanor’s green thumb brought vibrant life to her garden, a reflection of the beauty she cultivated in the lives around her.

A devoted wife to her late husband, Thomas, Eleanor built a loving home filled with laughter and cherished memories. She is survived by her loving children, Sarah (Michael) Davies and Robert (Emily) Vance, along with her adored grandchildren, Olivia, Liam, and Noah.

Her legacy of love, service, and sweet kindness will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew her. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, with visitation preceding at Palmetto Pines Funeral Home from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM. Interment will follow in the churchyard.

Arthur "Art" Jenkins, A Seafarer's Spirit Anchored in the Lowcountry

Arthur "Art" Jenkins, a vibrant spirit and dedicated architect, sailed into the sunset on September 18, 2025, at the age of 72.

Originally from New York, Art found his true home and passion when he moved to Charleston in the early 1980s. His architectural designs graced many of Charleston's historic streets, blending modern aesthetics with the city's timeless charm. Beyond his professional achievements, Art was an avid and skilled sailor, a proud member of the Charleston Yacht Club, where he spent countless hours navigating the coastal waters he loved so dearly.

His infectious laughter and captivating stories of sea adventures will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of hearing them.

Art is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia, his sister Margaret Thompson, and numerous nieces and nephews who adored their adventurous uncle. In accordance with his wishes, a private cremation has taken place.

A celebration of Art’s remarkable life will be announced at a later date, where friends and family can gather to share memories and raise a toast to a life well-lived and a spirit forever free on the open waves.

Reverend Dr. Samuel "Sam" Peterson, A Guiding Light and Champion of Justice

Samuel Peterson, a venerable figure whose life was a testament to faith and unwavering service, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, at the age of 92. Born in the rural heart of South Carolina, Reverend Peterson dedicated six decades of his life to ministry, touching countless souls with his wisdom, compassion, and powerful sermons.

A fearless advocate for civil rights, he tirelessly worked to uplift his community, establishing numerous outreach programs that continue to serve the underprivileged. Reverend Peterson was more than a pastor; he was a mentor, a confidant, and a moral compass for generations, leaving an indelible mark on the spiritual and social fabric of Charleston.

He leaves behind a profound legacy carried on by his devoted children, David (Carol) Peterson, Lisa (Mark) Chen, and Michael Peterson, along with a host of cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were inspired by his enduring faith and tireless pursuit of justice.

A public viewing will be held at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Friday, September 20, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A funeral service celebrating his extraordinary life will take place at the church on Saturday, September 21, 2025, at 10:00 AM, followed by interment at Peaceful Rest Cemetery.
