CFM International just cleared a big hurdle: both the U.S. FAA and Europe’s EASA have given the thumbs‑up to its LEAP‑1B high‑pressure turbine (HPT) durability kit. In plain English, the kit is meant to let the engine stay on the wing roughly twice as long when it’s fighting scorching heat and sand‑filled air, the sort of conditions you find over the Middle East or parts of India.

But the news doesn’t stop at a certification stamp. The company has already started ramping up production, and the first batch of kits should roll off the line in early 2027. Once that happens, airlines can expect to see the upgrade trickle through the whole LEAP‑1B fleet, gradually replacing the older hardware.

Alongside the HPT kit, CFM is also pushing a reverse‑bleed system (RBS) – a clever cooling trick that reduces the wear on the fuel nozzle. The RBS has already earned engine‑level approval, meaning it can be installed on existing engines without a full redesign. The result? Fewer on‑wing fuel‑nozzle swaps, and maintenance intervals that start to look more like the rock‑solid CFM56 family that operators have trusted for decades.

Gaël Meheust, CFM’s president and CEO, says the twin upgrades will let airlines keep their planes flying longer between shop visits while still enjoying the fuel‑efficiency and high utilization that the LEAP line is known for. “We’re giving customers a way to stretch time on wing without sacrificing reliability,” he noted.

Numbers back the optimism. Roughly 70 % of the LEAP‑1A fleet already runs with the reverse‑bleed system, and about 40 % of those engines have the HPT durability kit fitted. The broader LEAP program is also hitting a milestone: more than 10,000 engines delivered and a collective 100 million flight hours logged – a pace that outstripped the earlier CFM56 effort dramatically.

Reaching ten years since the LEAP‑1A entered service, CFM is pointing to this success as a cue to keep pushing. The firm says the next steps are all about squeezing out even more efficiency, availability and lower cost of ownership, so airlines can keep their planes humming even when the climate gets unforgiving.
