Researchers Detect ‘Ghost’ Lineages in Modern Genomes, Revealing Unexpected Interbreeding Events

A Berkeley study uncovers DNA from two previously unknown extinct human groups, showing our ancestors mingled far more than thought.

It turns out that the story of who we are is messier than a tidy family tree. A team of scientists at the University of California, Berkeley has spotted genetic fingerprints from not one, but two extinct human lineages that have never been seen in fossils or ancient DNA samples.

Using a fresh analytical tool they call TRACE, the researchers combed through hundreds of present‑day genomes and found tell‑tale “ghost” segments. One of these mysterious groups mixed with early modern humans in Africa over 50,000 years ago – well before Homo sapiens began its great exodus across the globe. Today, that hidden heritage makes up roughly half a percent to a full percent of the DNA of people everywhere.

The second, even older lineage split from our ancestors about 1.8 million years ago. Evidence suggests it later interbred with Denisovans in Eurasia more than 200,000 years ago, and bits of that exchange have survived in modern populations, especially those in Oceania where Denisovan DNA is already high.

What’s striking is that these lineages left no recognizable fossils. Their existence is inferred solely from odd patterns in modern DNA – essentially, the genome is whispering about relatives we never knew we had.

Some of the borrowed genes appear to influence immunity and metabolism, hinting that ancient interbreeding may have handed early humans useful adaptations for survival. The findings, published in Science, reinforce the idea that human evolution was a series of contacts and exchanges, not a linear march.

In short, our genetic story is a mosaic, constantly reshaped as new analytical methods peel back layers of the past. The “ghost” ancestors may be invisible in the bone record, but their legacy lives on in the DNA that flows through us today.
