Heartbreaking Tragedy: Toddler Critically Burned in Anganwadi Boiling Milk Incident

A wave of shock and sorrow has swept across Andhra Pradesh following a horrific incident at an anganwadi centre in Kadapa district, where a two-and-a-half-year-old girl, Hasini, sustained severe burn injuries after accidentally falling into a vessel of boiling milk. According to initial reports, the incident took place at the anganwadi centre in Proddatur mandal, where Hasini’s grandmother serves as a helper.

At the time of the accident, the grandmother had reportedly stepped away for a brief moment, leaving the young child unattended near a large vessel containing milk that was being boiled for the children's morning meal. In a devastating turn of events, the curious toddler stumbled and fell headfirst into the scalding liquid.

The screams of the child quickly alerted others, who rushed to pull her out.

However, the damage was already severe. Hasini suffered extensive burns, estimated to be around 60% of her body, primarily on her face, chest, and arms. She was immediately rushed to a local hospital in Proddatur before being transferred to a better-equipped facility in Vijayawada for specialized treatment.

Due to the critical nature of her injuries, she was subsequently airlifted to a private hospital in Chennai, where she remains in the Intensive Care Unit, undergoing treatment for deep burn wounds and battling for survival.

The incident has sparked outrage among parents and the public, prompting a swift response from authorities.

District Collector Vijayarama Raju has taken immediate action, suspending the anganwadi worker and helper responsible for the centre, citing gross negligence. An inquiry committee has also been constituted to thoroughly investigate the circumstances that led to this preventable tragedy and to recommend stricter safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
