It was through a recommendation, reportedly from then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi herself, who was a close friend of his father, that Amitabh Bachchan's name came to Abbas's notice.

The director was also impressed by a letter of introduction from his father, the renowned poet.

For his debut role as Anwar Ali, a poet from Bihar, Bachchan received a modest sum of Rs 5,000. 'Saat Hindustani', released in 1969, may not have been a blockbuster, but it marked the entry of a raw talent destined for greatness.

The film, though not his commercial breakthrough, provided him with invaluable experience and a platform. It was a testament to his dedication, taking him away from a comfortable job in Calcutta to chase an uncertain dream in Bombay.
