HAM(S) Steps Up: Rs 11 Lakh Donated to Bihar Flood Relief

The monsoon‑laden rivers have swelled beyond danger levels across Bihar, leaving millions stranded and scrambling for shelter. In the midst of this crisis, the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) – HAM(S) – decided to put its money where its mouth is.

On Sunday, a small delegation led by party national president and Minor Water Resources Minister Santosh Kumar Suman visited the Lok Sevak Awas, where Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary was receiving updates on the flood‑relief operations. The group presented a cheque for Rs 11 lakh, accompanied by a brief letter outlining the contribution.

But the cash wasn’t the only offering. Every HAM(S) MP, MLA and MLC handed over one month’s salary to the same fund, signaling a personal commitment that goes beyond party politics. “We stand with the people who have lost so much,” Suman said, his voice steady despite the chaos outside.

Chief Minister Choudhary thanked the party, noting that such contributions help fill the gaps in food, shelter and medical aid for families cut off by the floodwaters. The relief fund, already bolstered by donations from other quarters, now has an extra boost to support the roughly 46.9 lakh people affected in 15 districts, according to the state Disaster Management Department.

From the Ganga to the Kosi, Gandak, Burhi Gandak, Punpun, Bagmati and Ghaghra, river levels remain perilously high. The state has deployed 27 State Disaster Response Force teams and 10 National Disaster Response Force teams, set up community kitchens, and dispatched boats to ferry stranded residents to safety.

Other political players have also stepped in. The Bharatiya Janata Party has pledged Rs 51 lakh, while its national president Nitin Nabin contributed Rs 6.35 lakh – the equivalent of three months’ salary. Even the chief minister himself donated a month’s salary, underscoring the shared sense of urgency.

While the waters recede slowly, the combined financial support from parties, officials and ordinary citizens forms a lifeline for those whose homes, crops and livelihoods are under water. The hope is that these funds translate quickly into food packets, clean drinking water, temporary shelters, and eventually, a pathway back to normalcy.

As the monsoon season continues, officials remain on high alert, monitoring embankments and preparing for any further surges. For now, the gesture by HAM(S) and its representatives adds a modest but meaningful layer of relief in a time when every rupee counts.
