Thrissur – If you’ve ever stood for hours in the scorching heat just to glimpse the deity at Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple, relief may be just around the corner. The Guruvayoor Devaswom Board has announced a pilot online booking system that will let worshippers pick a specific time slot for darshan, all from the comfort of a computer or smartphone.

Starting on 4 August, the virtual‑queue facility will be active on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Those days, up to 300 pilgrims per hour – roughly 2,400 a day – can be accommodated through the digital platform. The idea is simple: choose a slot, confirm the booking, and walk straight to the sanctum when your turn arrives, bypassing the long physical lines that have become a hallmark of the temple’s busy seasons.

Each online reservation can include a small group of up to six people, which is handy for families traveling together. The board stressed that this limit is meant to keep the flow steady while still allowing a shared spiritual experience.

Why the sudden shift? Apart from the obvious convenience for devotees, the move follows a directive from the Kerala High Court, urging the Devaswom Board to adopt measures that improve crowd management and public safety. The board’s spokesperson said the virtual queue is a direct response to that order, aiming to make pilgrimages smoother and more orderly.

While the system is being rolled out on a trial basis, the board hinted that a successful run could see the service expanded to other days of the week, perhaps even becoming a permanent feature. For now, they’re keeping things modest – only Tuesdays and Thursdays – to iron out any technical glitches and gauge public response.
