Gurugram Hit‑and‑Run: AAP Volunteer Biker Who Once Contested Delhi’s Municipal Election

On a seemingly ordinary Sunday, 27‑year‑old Shivani Chauhan—known to her friends as Sia—was cruising down Golf Course Road on her Aprilia RS 457 when a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz slammed into her bike. The impact knocked her off, sending her sprawling onto the asphalt, and the incident was captured on her phone.

Chauhan, an active volunteer of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a former candidate for the 2022 Delhi Municipal Corporation elections from Kalkaji ward, says the collision was no accident. In a court statement she urged the police to arrest not only the driver, identified as gym owner Kalyan Bainsla, but also the two passengers who were with him.

“If they walk away, these kinds of attacks will keep happening,” she told the judge, her voice a mixture of frustration and resolve. The accused’s cousin tried to downplay the episode, claiming she was merely playing the ‘victim card’ for followers, a charge Chauhan dismissed outright.

According to the police, footage from the scene shows the car deliberately veering into her lane after an argument. Gurugram DCP (East) Sandeep Kumar stated, “It is clear the driver intended to kill the biker.” The investigation therefore upgraded the case to include Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita—an attempt‑to‑murder charge—alongside provisions related to stalking and assault on a woman’s modesty.

Beyond the legal battle, Chauhan’s background adds a political dimension. Her 2022 election affidavit listed assets worth Rs 45.67 lakh, including a 58.52‑square‑foot plot in Govind Puri, Kalkaji, purchased for Rs 35.36 lakh. She holds a Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design from the Footwear Design and Development Institute and was the youngest candidate fielded by AAP that year.

The accused, Bainsla, 33, and his cousin Lovneesh were apprehended after a two‑day chase that led police to Rajgarh, Rajasthan. Their attempt to evade custody—reportedly by pleading a bathroom emergency—ended with Bainsla slipping and sustaining injuries, after which he received first‑aid at a local hospital.

Shivani, who suffered injuries requiring an MRI and X‑rays, remains firm: “I won’t be silenced by baseless accusations. I’m here for justice, not for sympathy.” The case now moves forward, with the court set to decide on bail and further investigations.
