Gregory Hall Unveils Stunning Summer Transformation for a Brighter Academic Year

There’s always a certain buzz when a new academic year kicks off, isn’t there? But this fall at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, students, faculty, and staff returning to Gregory Hall were greeted with more than just fresh syllabi and renewed energy. The College of Media has been exceptionally busy behind the scenes, pouring effort and investment into some truly significant upgrades over the summer months, completely transforming key spaces within Gregory Hall.

It wasn't just a lick of paint, either. From the moment the spring semester wrapped up in May 2026, the building, a real hub for media studies, embarked on an ambitious renovation journey. The goal? To create more modern, accessible, and overall more inspiring environments for everyone who walks through its doors. And by the time the Fall 2026 semester rolled around, they had certainly delivered, turning once familiar rooms into wonderfully updated spaces.

Perhaps the most noticeable transformation took place in Room 123, a vital classroom and lecture space. This room received a comprehensive overhaul, almost a complete reimagining! Imagine walking in to find state-of-the-art audio/visual systems and projectors, ready to make presentations more seamless and engaging. The walls, now freshly painted, gleam, complemented by brand-new carpeting, crisp blinds, and modern lighting that truly brightens the entire space. Plus, they’ve added some elegant wainscoting – a lovely touch, if you ask me – giving the room a more refined feel. Crucially, accessibility enhancements were a top priority here, ensuring that Room 123 is welcoming and functional for absolutely everyone. And, for good measure, they even went through and cleaned up all that old, tangled wiring, making it safer and much tidier behind the scenes.

But the improvements didn’t stop there. The Peterson Conference Room (Room 231) and the Sandage Seminar Room (Room 336), both crucial for meetings, collaborations, and smaller group discussions, also received a major facelift. These rooms now boast plush new carpeting, contemporary blinds, and upgraded lighting, creating a much more inviting and professional atmosphere. Fresh paint adorns the walls, giving them a clean, crisp look. Room 231, in particular, now features a sleek new conference table and comfortable chairs, perfect for those important discussions. And, to really make them feel like part of the College of Media family, both 231 and 336 now proudly display new College of Media branding, a subtle nod to our vibrant community.

Even Room 225, which had already seen a major remodel in 2024, wasn't left out entirely. It received a thoughtful refresh with new blinds, just to keep things looking perfectly spick and span. It's those little details that really show the commitment, you know?

Beyond the individual rooms, broader building-wide enhancements were also rolled out. Security got a significant boost with upgraded building card access locks featuring new proximity readers, making entry smoother and the entire facility more secure – peace of mind for everyone. And for better wayfinding and communication, two brand-new digital signs have been installed in the lower-level hallway, keeping everyone informed about events and important announcements. It's all about making the daily experience better, more connected.

We hear there are even more exciting enhancements planned for the lower level of Gregory Hall, expected to roll out later this academic year.
