Great White Shark Tagged off Rhode Island: Meet Oscar

Earlier this week, a team from the Atlantic Shark Institute pulled a great white shark out of the chilly waters off Rhode Island, gave him a quick health check and—like a marine‑world version of a birthday present—slapped an acoustic tag onto his flank.

They’ve christened the newcomer “Oscar.” He’s a very young juvenile, probably only a few years old, and according to the institute’s social‑media post he was in “great shape” when they let him go. The video they shared shows the scientists holding the sleek predator briefly, then gently sliding the tag, which looks like a tiny, waterproof beacon, onto his side.

What makes Oscar special isn’t just his size; it’s the tech inside that little tag. Designed to last around ten years, the acoustic transmitter will broadcast a unique ping that underwater listening stations along the East Coast can pick up. In theory, researchers could follow Oscar’s migrations for a decade, watching him cruise from New England down to the subtropical waters of the Carolinas and perhaps even farther north into Canadian seas.

“We hope to track him for many years and learn more about the migratory pathways of young great whites,” the institute wrote. This isn’t their first rodeo—over 50 great whites have already been tagged by the group, each one adding a puzzle piece to the broader picture of how these apex predators use our coastal ecosystems.
