Grand Rapids' Leonard Street Gears Up for Major Construction Reboot in Spring 2025

Drivers navigating this vital artery should prepare for another significant construction phase beginning in Spring 2025. Following a previously completed section, the next segment of Leonard Street NW, stretching from Covell Avenue to West River Drive, will undergo a comprehensive overhaul aimed at bolstering the city's infrastructure and improving the daily commute.

This upcoming project is far more than just a fresh coat of asphalt.

It's a critical $6.9 million investment in the heart of Grand Rapids' utilities. Plans include the vital replacement of aging sanitary sewer and water mains beneath the roadway, ensuring reliable service for years to come. Once these foundational improvements are complete, the street will receive a much-needed full resurfacing, promising a smoother, safer ride for everyone.

The first phase of improvements, which spanned Leonard Street NW from Covell Avenue to Collindale Avenue, was successfully completed in 2023, giving residents a glimpse of the long-term vision for this corridor.

This new segment picks up where the last left off, continuing the modernization effort across a bustling stretch of the city.

Funding for this substantial undertaking is a collaborative effort. A significant portion, $4.1 million, comes from state funds through the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Transportation Alternatives Program.

The remaining $2.8 million will be covered by a city bond sale and utility fees, showcasing a joint commitment to urban development and essential service upgrades.

Grand Rapids-based Kamminga & Roodvoets Inc. has been awarded the contract for this significant project.
