Governor Sherrill vows swift action as Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell faces misconduct probe

Governor Mikie Sherrill addressed the state on Tuesday, emphasizing that any report of inappropriate behavior or misconduct will be treated with the utmost seriousness. She made the remarks after a New Jersey Globe story suggested that Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell was under investigation for alleged misconduct involving women and possible ethics violations, including the rumored offer of state jobs.

"I know that jobs of public trust impact the lives of everyday people," Sherrill said. "Because of that respect, I demand that everyone in my administration hold themselves to the highest standards and put their obligations to public service first." She added that any credible allegation would be fully examined, and if the evidence warranted, “appropriate action” would follow quickly.

The probe, according to the Globe, is being led by former Attorney General Christopher Porrino, who has been interviewing complainants, state employees, and potential witnesses. Sherrill stressed that the safety and privacy of anyone who comes forward are paramount, promising protection from retaliation and a fair review for the subject of any complaint.

While Sherrill’s announcement did not name Caldwell directly, Republicans were quick to criticize the perceived silence. Assembly Republican Leader John DiMaio likened the situation to past scandals, saying the governor “promised something different” and is now “not delivering.” Assemblyman Christopher DePhillips joined the call, urging the governor to place Caldwell on administrative leave, disclose the investigation’s timeline, and publicly release its findings.

In response, Sherrill reiterated her commitment to “tough fights” and to putting New Jerseyans first, but she stopped short of providing the specific details the GOP lawmakers demand. The lieutenant governor, a former university president and pastor from New Brunswick, has a long résumé that includes stints at Fairleigh Dickinson University, the Department of Community Affairs, and the Newark Alliance, as well as a 26‑year tenure on the New Brunswick school board.

The unfolding situation adds another layer of scrutiny to the Sherrill administration, which is already navigating a complex political landscape.
