Governor Sherrill Vows Swift Action Amid Lt. Gov. Caldwell Misconduct Probe

Governor Mikie Sherrill took to the podium on Tuesday, her tone firm but not without a hint of the weight the news carries. She said her administration will treat "any reports of inappropriate behavior or misconduct extremely seriously," a statement that lands squarely in the middle of a growing scandal surrounding Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell.

The spark for this fire came last Friday when the New Jersey Globe published a story alleging that Caldwell is under investigation for alleged inappropriate conduct with women, and possibly even for offering state jobs in ways that could breach ethics rules. The Globe notes that former Attorney General Christopher Porrino is leading the probe, interviewing state employees and other potential witnesses.

Sherrill didn’t name Caldwell outright, but the subtext was unmistakable. “I know that jobs of public trust impact the lives of everyday people, and I deeply respect the oaths and responsibilities of these positions,” she said. “Because of this respect, I demand that everyone in my administration hold themselves to the highest standards and put their obligations to public service first.” She went on to promise that any credible report will be examined fully and, if the evidence warrants, addressed quickly.

In a bid to reassure potential whistle‑blowers, the governor added, "I have a vital responsibility to the safety and privacy of every person. Anyone must know that they can come forward with a complaint and they will be safe from retaliation. The subject of a complaint must also know and be confident that their rights will be protected as well, and they will receive a fair and thorough review."

The response, however, has drawn sharp criticism from the state’s Republican leaders. Assembly Republican Leader John DiMaio warned that “we have been here before,” pointing to past scandals where officials claimed ignorance while apparently knowing more. Assemblyman Christopher DePhillips echoed the call for transparency, urging Sherrill to place Caldwell on administrative leave, disclose the investigation’s timeline, and release its findings publicly.

For context, Dale Caldwell—once president of Centenary University and a longtime volunteer on the New Brunswick school board—was chosen as Sherrill’s running mate in 2025. His résumé also includes stints as executive director of the Rothman Institute at Fairleigh Dickinson University, deputy commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs, and pastor of Covenant United Methodist Church in Plainfield.

As the investigation unfolds, the governor’s office says it will keep the public informed while protecting the rights of everyone involved. New Jersey watchers will be watching closely to see whether the promised “swift and appropriate action” materializes or becomes another political footnote.
