Google Tests ‘Dive Deeper’ Button in Discover, Starting With Video Cards

Google rolls out a new “Dive deeper” feature in Discover, initially tied to videos

Google is experimenting with a “Dive deeper” button in Discover that opens a short, AI‑generated topic overview with links to related stories, beginning with video content.

On Friday, Robby Stein, Google Search’s VP of Product, took to X to announce a fresh experiment for Discover users. The company is piloting a “Dive deeper” button that, when tapped, expands a video card into a compact topic overview packed with links to other coverage, community reactions and original reporting.

In the example Stein shared, a weather video from KCRA 3 appears in the Discover feed. Below the clip is a brief AI‑generated summary of a Northern California heat wave, plus a disclaimer that the AI might err. The new button sits right underneath.

Tap it, and a second screen pops up. The same video stays at the top, but now a longer, more detailed summary rides alongside a row of source cards – the first one, for instance, points back to kcra.com. A third pane follows, titled “Explore more stories,” where sub‑topic headings break down the issue and each line offers a short description plus a source link.

This rollout is limited to videos for now; Google says it will test multiple designs over the coming weeks. No details were given about the geographic or language scope, nor about how many users will see the change.

The move builds on earlier AI‑driven Discover features. Back in October 2025, Google added AI previews to trending topics, letting users expand a card for more context and links. The new “Dive deeper” experience mirrors that approach but is anchored to video cards rather than text‑only cards.

Webmasters can keep an eye on the impact through Search Console’s generative AI performance report for Discover, which logs impressions for AI‑powered elements. The report currently lumps all AI features together, so impressions from the “Dive deeper” overview will be mixed with other AI previews.

Why does this matter? It gives users a clear, one‑tap path to richer information without leaving the Discover environment. For publishers, it could mean more visibility for related articles, though the exact crediting mechanism remains opaque.

Stein hinted that the design will evolve, and while the test starts with videos, there’s no set timetable for expanding to other content types. We’ll have to wait and see how the feature shapes the Discover experience in the weeks ahead.
