Google Discover Experiments with “Dive Deeper” Topic Overviews, Starting with Videos

Google rolls out a test button that opens short, AI‑generated topic overviews when users tap “Dive deeper” on video cards in Discover.

Google is quietly testing a new “Dive deeper” button in Discover. Tapping it expands a concise, AI‑written overview with links to related stories, beginning with video content.

On Friday, Robby Stein, Google Search’s VP of Product, took to X to announce a small but intriguing experiment in Discover. The company is now slipping a “Dive deeper” button onto some cards – starting with videos – that, when tapped, unfurls a brief topic overview and a handful of links to related coverage.

What does that look like in practice? In the example Stein shared, a user sees a KCRA‑3 weather video about a Northern California heat wave. Below the clip sits a short AI‑generated summary and the new button. Tap it, and a second screen appears: the same video, a longer, more detailed write‑up, and a row of source cards – the first one from kcra.com.

Scroll a little further, and the “Explore more stories” section rolls out. Here, sub‑headings break the topic into bite‑size pieces, each paired with a short description and a link to the original article. It’s a tidy way to surface additional angles without forcing the user to hunt for them.

Google isn’t disclosing which markets or languages are part of the test, nor how many people will see it. The plan, however, is to run several design variations over the coming weeks and see which layout feels most natural.

This isn’t Google’s first foray into AI‑driven Discover features. Back in October 2025 the company introduced AI previews for trending topics, which also expand to reveal more information and links. The new “Dive deeper” overlay builds on that concept, but it’s tied specifically to a video card rather than a generic topic card.

For webmasters, there’s a modest implication. Search Console now includes a generative‑AI performance report for Discover, counting impressions of AI‑powered links. Because the report doesn’t break down impressions by individual feature, any clicks generated by the “Dive deeper” overlay will blend in with other AI‑generated content.

What’s next? Stein hinted that the experiment will evolve beyond videos, though no timeline was given. As Google tweaks the design, we’ll likely see the button’s look and the depth of the overview shift, all in an effort to make related content easier to discover.

Bottom line: a simple tap could soon open a mini‑hub of context around a single video, nudging users toward a richer, more connected browsing experience.
