Glen Rock House Fire Tamed After Midnight Lightning Storm

In the quiet hours of Thursday, just after 2:30 a.m., the Glen Rock Police Chief Michael Trover got the call that would send fire trucks racing toward 37 Hanover Place. The sky had been flashing with lightning moments before, and a few nervous neighbors reported seeing strikes nearby.

When the first engine pulled up, the house was already aflame. Luckily, the residents were out – a quick evacuation that turned out to be a relief for everyone. No one was hurt, and the only thing that needed rescuing was the still‑smoldering structure.

Police crews acted fast, shutting off the gas line in the area before the fire department even arrived. That little step helped keep the blaze from getting any bigger, a detail that many don’t think about when they hear about a house fire.

Firefighters battled the flames for a short but intense period. By the time the sun hinted at rising, the blaze was fully extinguished. The Glen Rock Fire Investigator, Sgt. Greg Carter, is now sifting through the evidence – ash, scorch marks, and the usual forensic clues – to decide whether lightning was the spark that set everything off.

“There were numerous reports of lightning strikes in the area preceding the fire call, but it has not yet been determined if the fire was lightning‑related,” Trover said. In other words, the investigation is still open, and the answer may not come until later this week.

Hawthorne’s Fire Department jumped in to help, providing mutual aid as the two towns have done many times before. Their crews posted a quick thank‑you on social media, showing the camaraderie that’s common among New Jersey first‑responders.

Just weeks earlier, a similar lightning‑induced fire had rattled neighboring Ridgewood, reminding residents that a summer storm can bring more than just rain. For now, though, Glen Rock can breathe a little easier, thanks to the swift actions of its police, fire, and utility crews.
