The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ramped up its search for the men's national team's new head coach, following the announcement of Rahul Dravid's departure. Among the prominent names under consideration are several renowned former cricketers, including VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir from India. International candidates like Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, and Stephen Fleming have also been mentioned. However, it appears that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir has emerged as the No. 1 candidate on the BCCI's radar.
According to a report by Dainik Jagaran, Gambhir is keen on taking up the role of India’s head coach, despite this being his inaugural year as the mentor of KKR. However, Gambhir has stipulated a significant condition before he submits his application for the position.
The report indicates that Gambhir is only willing to apply if he is guaranteed selection. The former India opening batter is not interested in merely being an applicant. Only the assurance of being chosen as Dravid's replacement will see Gambhir commit to the role.
The deadline to apply for the head coach position is May 27. It remains unclear how many candidates have officially applied for the role. The BCCI has recently denied reaching out to Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer for the job, despite claims from both that they were approached but declined the offer.
Should Gambhir apply and be selected, he would need to step down from his current role as the mentor for the Knight Riders. The former left-handed batter, who led KKR to two IPL titles as captain, has been credited with the team's resurgence in IPL 2024. This turnaround has significantly bolstered his prospects as India's potential head coach.
Gambhir's proven leadership and strategic acumen, showcased during his tenure with KKR, make him a compelling candidate for the national team's head coaching position. As the BCCI finalizes its decision, all eyes will be on whether Gambhir's condition will be met, paving the way for his transition from a successful franchise mentor to the head coach of India's cricket team.
