Gang-Rape Accused Shot by Police During Escape Attempt in Karnataka

In a development that underscores the challenges and dangers faced by law enforcement, an individual accused in a harrowing gang-rape case involving a minor girl was shot by police in Belagavi, Karnataka, after allegedly attempting to flee custody. The incident unfolded during a critical phase of the investigation, as authorities sought to reconstruct the crime scene.

The accused, identified as 22-year-old Arjun Khankare, is a key suspect in the brutal gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl in the Gokak taluk.

The horrific crime, which reportedly occurred on November 14, prompted a swift and decisive response from the Gokak police following a complaint lodged by the victim's distressed family.

According to police reports, Khankare was taken by officers to an isolated location near the Malaprabha river – the alleged site of the crime – for a 'spot mahazar,' a procedure essential for crime scene investigation and evidence collection.

It was during this procedure, while in police custody, that Khankare reportedly seized an opportunity to escape, making a desperate dash for freedom.

Despite repeated warnings from the accompanying officers, Khankare allegedly continued his attempt to flee, forcing the police to resort to firing in self-defense and to prevent his escape.

He sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, effectively halting his flight. Immediately following the incident, Khankare was apprehended and rushed to the Belagavi Civil Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment for his injury.

The investigation into the heinous crime continues vigorously.

While Khankare has been apprehended, three other individuals are believed to be involved in the gang-rape. Authorities have successfully arrested one additional accused, but the remaining two suspects currently remain at large. Police officials have assured the public that all efforts are being made to locate and apprehend the absconding individuals, ensuring that justice is served for the young victim and her family.
