From 'Bachelorette' to Brave Recovery: Joe Amabile's Health Journey

It's been a truly challenging time for reality TV darling Joe Amabile, better known to fans as 'Grocery Store Joe' from "The Bachelorette" and "Bachelor in Paradise." But after undergoing serious brain surgery, he's finally shared a candid and, frankly, very encouraging health update. In a video posted to his Instagram this past Wednesday, about a week after his procedure, Joe told his followers that he's feeling "really great for the most part" – and honestly, that's music to everyone's ears.

Just last month, on July 13th, Joe revealed the startling news: he'd been diagnosed with a very low-grade astrocytoma, often described as a blueberry-sized lesion or glioma. It's a pretty scary thing to hear, if you can imagine. He initially spoke about the diagnosis on July 16th during an episode of his podcast, "Not Married to This," giving us a first glimpse into the gravity of his situation.

His journey led him to NYU Langone Health, where he underwent a craniotomy – brain surgery, pure and simple. It wasn't an easy road immediately after, as he shared with his followers. Joe admitted to struggling with speaking for a bit, which, as anyone can attest, must have been incredibly frustrating. And the pain? It was no joke. He was on some pretty strong stuff, OxyContin to be exact, to manage it.

But thankfully, things have turned a corner. "I am off of the painkillers, the heavy stuff, I’m just on Tylenol," he explained in his recent update. What a relief, right? His wife, the wonderful Serena Pitt, has been an absolute rock throughout this entire ordeal. Her support, no doubt, has been instrumental in his recovery, making a tough situation just a little bit more bearable.

Looking ahead, Joe's treatment plan involves taking a daily pill to, as he put it, "put those remaining tumor cells to sleep." He'll also be undergoing regular MRIs to keep a close eye on things. It's a new normal, but one he seems to be embracing with a positive outlook.
