Former Army Soldier Charged With Arson After Beaumont Blaze

Police in Beaumont, Texas, announced Tuesday that they have arrested a man who previously served in the United States Army on an arson charge. The suspect, identified as 33‑year‑old Michael R. Thomas, allegedly set fire to a single‑family home on June 18, causing extensive damage but, thankfully, no serious injuries.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, detectives responded to a 911 call reporting heavy smoke and flames at the residence on North Main Street. When officers arrived, the blaze was already well underway, and firefighters spent nearly two hours battling the flames before they were finally under control.

“We’re still piecing together exactly how and why this fire started,” said Sheriff’s Deputy Laura Martinez. “What we do know is that evidence at the scene points strongly to an intentional act, and we have reason to believe the suspect was in the vicinity.”

Investigators say surveillance footage captured a dark‑cloaked figure near the property just minutes before the fire ignited. Forensic analysis later detected accelerants—substances commonly used to speed up a fire—inside the living room, bolstering the theory of arson.

Thomas, who enlisted in the Army in 2012 and completed two overseas deployments, was taken into custody without incident at his home on June 20. He is being held on a $10,000 bond pending a court appearance scheduled for next month.

Friends and family, who declined to be named, expressed shock at the allegations. “Mike’s always been a solid guy. This is just…unthinkable,” one acquaintance said, adding that they hope the truth will soon emerge.
