Flint Man Charged After Terrifying Incident Involving Dragging State Trooper During Traffic Stop

It's one of those stories that makes you stop and think about the daily dangers our law enforcement officers face. A Flint man, Tyrone Williams, aged 34, has now been formally charged following a truly harrowing incident where he's accused of dragging a Michigan State Police trooper with his vehicle during a traffic stop right here in Flint.

The whole thing unfolded back on January 29th, a seemingly ordinary day that quickly turned perilous. According to reports, Trooper Caleb R. Starr, who works out of the Flint post, had initiated what appeared to be a routine traffic stop. He'd pulled over a GMC Terrain, driven by Williams, apparently for a registration issue. Simple enough, right? But what came next was anything but.

As the stop progressed, authorities say Williams, perhaps trying to avoid trouble, allegedly provided a false name to Trooper Starr. And then, well, things escalated dramatically. Instead of complying further, Williams is accused of suddenly hitting the gas, attempting to flee the scene. Here's where it gets truly terrifying: Trooper Starr, in the process of his duties, was reportedly dragged a short distance by the vehicle as it sped away. Imagine that sudden, unexpected jolt and the sheer danger involved.

Thankfully, Trooper Starr, despite the immediate threat, managed to free himself from the moving vehicle. He did sustain some minor injuries in the process, which, while not life-threatening, certainly highlight the extreme peril he was in. It’s a testament to his training and, frankly, good fortune that he wasn't more seriously hurt.

Investigators didn't waste any time tracking down Williams. He was later apprehended and now faces a slew of very serious charges. These include assault with intent to murder, which is, of course, a profoundly grave accusation. He's also charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting and obstructing a police officer. To make matters even more complicated for Williams, he's also being charged as a habitual offender, given his prior convictions, which can significantly increase potential penalties if he's found guilty.

Williams has since been arraigned in the 67th District Court. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of police work and the very real risks involved every single day. Our thoughts, naturally, go out to Trooper Starr for his recovery and continued safety on the job.
