Flash Flood Cripples Sangla‑Chitkul Road in Himachal’s Kinnaur, ITBP Camp at Risk

On Saturday evening, just as the sun was beginning to dip behind the towering peaks of Kinnaur, a deafening roar rose from the valleys. People later learned it was a flash flood – likely sparked by a cloudburst on a higher mountain summit – that surged down the Graga Nala, a narrow stream that snakes through the Sangla Valley.

Within minutes, the torrent swelled far beyond its banks, dragging mud, rocks and massive boulders onto the Sangla‑Chitkul road. The highway, which is the main artery for locals and tourists alike, was completely blocked near the ITBP camp at Mastrang (often referred to as Rakchham). Vehicles on both sides came to an abrupt halt, and the usual hum of traffic was replaced by a strange, uneasy silence.

Fortunately, despite the dramatic scene, officials confirmed there were no casualties and no reported damage to private homes or government structures. The relief was short‑lived, however, because the residential wing of the ITBP camp sits uncomfortably close to the swollen stream. Authorities warned that if water levels rise further, the camp could face additional danger.

The Himachal Pradesh district administration moved quickly, issuing a travel advisory that asks residents and visitors to steer clear of the Sangla‑Chitkul road until it is declared safe. They also urged people to stay away from rivers, ravines and any area prone to landslides – a sensible reminder when monsoon rain is still forecast for the next few days.

Adding to the worry, the Shimla Meteorological Office has raised a red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several neighboring districts, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Sirmaur. The gloomy weather outlook means the situation could deteriorate, and the administration is asking everyone to follow official guidance and postpone non‑essential travel.

While the road remains blocked and the ITBP camp is on watch, rescue teams and local volunteers are keeping a close eye on water levels and are ready to act if the floodwater recedes or, conversely, rises again. For now, the valley rests in a tense waiting game, hoping the rains ease and the road can be cleared for the sake of the communities that depend on it.
