Evanston Gears Up to Pull a Plane for Special Olympics Illinois!

Our very own Team Evanston is stepping up to an incredible challenge: participating in the annual O'Hare Plane Pull, all to benefit the fantastic athletes of Special Olympics Illinois.

Now, when we say 'plane pull,' we mean exactly that. Imagine this: a behemoth of an aircraft, a United Airlines 737, tipping the scales at over 95,000 pounds – that's a lot of metal, folks – will be waiting patiently on the tarmac. Teams, each made up of up to twenty dedicated individuals, will then grab a rope, dig in their heels, and quite literally attempt to pull this giant plane twelve feet, as fast as humanly possible. It's not just a feat of strength; it's an exhilarating, tug-of-war style competition that you really have to see to believe.

But beyond the sheer spectacle of it all, there's a deeply meaningful reason behind every single pull. The O'Hare Plane Pull serves as a crucial fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois, an organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The funds raised directly support these 'incredible athletes,' as the Evanston Police Department so aptly put it, helping them develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

Team Evanston, representing our wonderful community, is committed to making a real difference.
