End of an Era: India Bids Farewell to the Iconic MiG-21 Fighter Jet

A legendary chapter in Indian aviation history is drawing to a close as the Indian Air Force (IAF) systematically phases out its aging fleet of MiG-21 fighter jets. Often dubbed the 'Flying Coffin' due to its controversial safety record, yet undeniably a workhorse that defined a generation of air combat, the MiG-21 is making its final bow, paving the way for a modern and formidable air force.

51 Squadron 'Sword Arms', marking the first step in a complete retirement plan. By 2025, all remaining three squadrons of the MiG-21 Bison variant are expected to be retired, signaling a monumental shift in India's aerial defense strategy. The IAF is steadily bolstering its capabilities with advanced aircraft such as the Sukhoi-30MKI, the French-made Rafale, and the indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas.
