Edmonton's Weekend Wonders: A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Pure Fun!

Oh, Edmonton, you’re really spoiling us this weekend, aren't you? Seriously, if you've been looking for an excuse to dive headfirst into our city's vibrant heart, this is it! We’re right in the thick of "Alberta Culture Days," that glorious month-long provincial celebration of all things arts, culture, heritage, and diversity. And let me tell you, our city and its neighbours are absolutely brimming with fantastic, often free, events just waiting to be explored.

So, where to begin? Well, for a lovely step back in time, you absolutely must check out Rutherford House. This grand old 1911 post-Edwardian home, once belonging to Alberta's very first premier, is opening its doors for tours all weekend long, Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s nestled right there on the University of Alberta campus, a truly beautiful spot.

Feeling a bit more theatrical? The Citadel Theatre, a cornerstone of our arts scene, is going all out this Saturday and Sunday. They’re hosting a whole day of family-friendly activities. Think theatre school games, fascinating backstage tours, chances to chat with artists, and even film screenings. What a fantastic way to experience the magic of the stage!

If live music and a bit of a swing in your step sound good, make your way to McIntyre Park in Old Strathcona on Saturday. The Cosmopolitan Music Society is presenting "Culture Days at McIntyre Park" from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You'll hear everything from the Parkbench Concert Band to the Jazz Big Band, plus a Handbell Choir, and if you’re brave enough, even some swing dance lessons! It’s such a lively atmosphere.

Now, for a truly immersive cultural journey, don't miss "Pinas Kultura Days" at the Stanley A. Milner Library this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is day two of an incredible exploration into Filipino culture, packed with exhibits, workshops, storytelling, art, music, and thought-provoking contemporary conversations. It's truly a rich experience, courtesy of the Edmonton Philippine International Centre.

Of course, our magnificent Royal Alberta Museum is also joining the festivities. This Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can wander through their incredible natural and cultural history exhibits, and if you’ve got little ones in tow, the creative play spaces in the Children's Gallery are always a hit. It’s always a good time there, isn't it?

For something a bit more hands-on and contemporary, Arts Habitat Edmonton is bringing us "HeART of the Habitat" at ArtsHub Ortona on Saturday, running from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. They've got performances, workshops, activities, and exhibitions galore. It's free, but you'll need to grab a ticket, so plan ahead!

And speaking of celebrating diversity, the "One People Festival: Celebrating Unity Through Culture" is happening at Whitemud Crossing Theatre on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Vision de Loin is putting on this fantastic, family-friendly multicultural event filled with music, dance, storytelling, delicious food, and wonderful community showcases. It’s really something special.

Ever thought about dominoes as a symbol of togetherness? Kayanou certainly has, with their "Terre Des Rencontres/Meeting Grounds" event at The Orange Hub this Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's all about playing, sharing stories, and passing on traditions. How wonderfully unique!

Don't forget to mark your calendars for YouthWrite's 30th Anniversary Block Party! This Saturday evening at 6 p.m., on 64 Street NW, they’re throwing a bash with live performances, refreshments, canapés, and dancing. The Spoken Word Youth Choir and The oHNo Band are just a couple of the special guests you can look forward to. Sounds like a blast, right?

Then, on Sunday, the Edmonton Malayali Association of Alberta is presenting "Dey Maveli 2.0" at the Pleasantview Community League hall, kicking off at 11 a.m. This event is a joyful celebration of cultural diversity through music, dance, arts, and traditions. And finally, for a truly significant event, the Connect Society is hosting "Hands Across Alberta: A Deaf Cultural Celebration" at the Edmonton Association of the Deaf on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Held during the International Week of Deaf People, it promises presentations, a short film, and, of course, popcorn and cake!

But wait, there's more beyond the city limits! Our neighbours are getting in on the Culture Days fun too. In St. Albert, you could learn some hair-braiding techniques at the African and African Descendant Friendship Club's workshop (registration needed!) or get creative at the Visual Arts Council Drop-in Workshops, meeting various guilds and trying out hands-on art activities at St. Albert Place this Saturday. Strathcona County offers a fascinating workshop on "How to Photograph Your Artwork" at Gallery@501 if you're keen on showcasing your creations (again, registration required). And in Leduc, Connectivity Dance is celebrating 16 years with a birthday party featuring free dance classes and breaking demonstrations – what a lively way to celebrate!

Now, if you're looking for something a little different, Edmonton still has you covered. Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at our transit system? ETS is holding an Open House at the D.L. MacDonald Garage this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can tour the garage, explore vehicles, and even sit in an operator's seat! Just remember to take the free shuttle from Belvedere Transit Centre, as there’s no on-site parking.

For aviation enthusiasts, the Alberta Aviation Museum is hosting its popular "Open Cockpit Day" this Saturday. Imagine climbing aboard over a dozen aircraft, learning about 20 planes, trying out the simulator lab, and enjoying family activities. Tickets are required for this one, but it’s truly a unique experience.

And for pure festival vibes, "AsiaFest YEG" is back and bigger than ever at Currents of Windermere, running Friday through Sunday, 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily. It’s twice the size of last year's event, boasting over 120 vendors (including more than 40 food destinations – yum!), over 50 performance groups, cultural showcases, and plenty of family fun. Plus, the spooky season is almost here, and "Pumpkins After Dark" is lighting up Borden Park all weekend. Finally, for sports fans, it's a double header! Our Edmonton Elks take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Commonwealth Stadium this Saturday at 5 p.m. And later that evening, the NHL preseason heats up with the Edmonton Oilers battling the Calgary Flames at Rogers Place at 7 p.m. What a thrilling way to cap off a busy weekend!
